The descriptions below should serve as guidelines for players and teams when registering for leagues or tournaments. Selecting the appropriate division for you and your team is the key to having the best time possible out on the sand! To help keep leagues fun, fair, and competitive for everyone, Sandbox KC may move teams to a more appropriate division if needed and if space allows.

Beer League
Lowest Level | Social & Beginner-Friendly

• Brand new or very little volleyball experience
• Focus on fun, movement, and getting the ball over the net
• Do whatever is necessary to return the ball
• Basic serving, passing, and rules
• Relaxed, social, low-pressure environment
• No jump serving, sky balls or aggressive downward hitting

Perfect for teams who are brand new to volleyball or just want a fun, social way to be active.

Rec League – C
Beginner | Learning & Development

• Understands the basics and wants to improve
• Teams attempt 2–3 hits per side
• Focus on consistency, teamwork, and learning structure
• Players begin developing passing, setting, and attacking
• Competitive but still beginner-friendly
• No jump serving, sky balls or aggressive downward hitting
• Not intended for aggressive or power hitters

Perfect for teams who understand the basics and are ready to improve consistency, teamwork, and structured 2–3 hit volleyball in a fun, low-pressure environment.

Our goal is to create balanced, competitive, and enjoyable leagues for all players. These guidelines are here to help teams choose the right level and ensure a great experience for everyone. If needed, Sandbox KC may adjust team placements based on skill level and availability.

Placement Guidelines:

• Teams should select a division based on the overall skill level of the majority of their roster. Adding one or two developing players should not be used to justify playing in a lower division.
• Teams that have consistently placed or won multiple seasons in the same division are encouraged to move up and challenge themselves at the next level. This helps maintain balanced and competitive leagues for all players.
• Skill level may vary depending on the teams registered each season.
